SEASON

JANUARY - MARCH: GREEN SEASON
This is Zambia's 'Emerald Season' - when most camps close and many roads in Zambia become impassable to there is not much happening in the Lower Zambezi! It is the most humid time of year in Mozambique with temperatures often above 35°C and often there are tropical rain bursts in the late afternoon or overnight. Turtle hatchlings appear along the beaches from late January to March.
Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro are closed.

APRIL - JUNE: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The rains gradually subside from April and camps begin to open in Zambia. By May the landscape is looking lush and green and temperatures are extremely comfortable for safari. Wildlife sightings are beginning to be very good. It is a lovely time of year to be on the beach in Mozambique, the days are dry and not too hot, the evenings are cooler, and the whales start appearing on the coastline. A great time for scuba diving too.
Chiawa Camp and Old Mondoro open 24 April.

JULY - SEPTEMBER: THE PERFECT TIME TO VISIT
Superb time for Zambia, especially for walking safari enthusiasts, as the temperatures are still moderate to make walking comfortable. Game viewing is excellent. This is one of the best times to visit Mozambique with lovely warm days, cooler evenings and very little rain. Excellent scuba diving and a good chance of seeing humpback whales on the coastline.

OCTOBER - DECEMBER: IF YOU CAN TAKE THE HEAT
This season is very much the same in Zambia and Mozambique. The days are at their hottest and quite dry in October. It starts becoming humid in November, and the weather is a bit unpredictable as December draws near and it transitions into the rainy season. It's a fabulous time to do absolutely nothing on the private beaches of Quilalea Island, and go seeking for nesting turtles during the balmy evenings.
Old Mondoro closes 14 November | Chiawa Camp closes 21 November

Old Mondoro

About an hour east downstream by boat from sister camp Chiawa, Old Mondoro is located in the wonderfully open area of Faidherbia Forest. The camp is a far simpler affair that Chiawa yet the guiding levels, activity choice, service and excellent home-cooking remain are par. The comfortable rooms are strung out along a hippo-friendly channel off the Zambezi, enjoying great views with their half-height walls and small decks. Activities at Old Mondoro focus on game drives and boating, though the elephant and hippo activity around camp are enough to encourage a lodge-based safari! Tasty meals are served fireside or in the open-sided thatched dining room, and star-gazing in this remote spot makes a perfect pastime...
