FOUR delta camps. ONE safari ethos
11 June 2019

Bush luxury and safari authenticity

I have just returned from a fabulous week in Botswana with MACHABA SAFARIS where I stayed at Machaba Camp followed by Gomoti Plains Camp.
When I feel that so many lodges and camps have lost their sense of place by focusing on interiors over wilderness surroundings, I found the ethos of Machaba Safaris truly refreshing: keep it real, keep it connected, experience bush luxury and safari authenticity.

MY HIGHLIGHTS
  • KEEP IT REAL — these areas are teeming with wildlife; the Khwai concession is shared with other camps while Gomoti is in a private wilderness wonderland.
  • KEEP IT CONNECTED — people make the experiences and the teams at MACHABA CAMP & LITTLE MACHABA as well as GOMOTI PLAINS & GOMOTI PRIVATE are exceptional.
  • BUSH LUXURY — the camps are a wonderful mix of raw luxury, well-designed, logical, functional, no steps, some sand yet stylish and beautiful.
  • SAFARI AUTHENTICITY — combine all of the above, together with great value rates and you have one of the most authentic safaris in the Okavango Delta.
DO NOT FORGET
The latest additions to the Machaba Safaris group are their camps in Zimbabwe - Verney's Camp, Deteema Springs and Deka Camp.

Tanzania

WHAT WE LOVE: This low-key, unassuming country is also home to some of Africa’s most famed tourist destinations: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar. While most visitors will congregate at these undeniably exotic spots, Tanzania has many other hidden natural, historical and cultural gems; including 19th-century caravan routes, once-famed ports of call for Oriental merchant ships, ancient rock paintings, Africa’s largest protected natural area (Selous), as well as prime destinations for seeing chimpanzees in the wild. All this is held together by the beauty and dignity of over 100 ethnic groups that live amicably in Tanzania.

Marataba Conservation Camps

Marataba, a 21,000-hectare (52,000-acre), privately managed section of the Marakele National Park, is uniquely situated where lush bushveld gives way to the Kalahari sands, in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. As a contractual National Park, Marataba is one of South Africa’s most innovative conservation models. From the vision of an iconic president to the unique public-private partnership that exists today, the focus is firmly on protecting the area’s diverse flora and fauna through modern and hands-on conservation practices.

A stay at Marataba Conservation Camps is focused on balancing tourism with nature. Guests can immerse themselves in solitude of the vast, wild spaces of Marataba whilst also actively participating in essential conservation projects. Founders Camp, with 4 suites and 1 vehicle and guide, can be booked on an exclusive-use basis. The camp overlooks the Matlabas River, which attracts a variety of wildlife. The suites are tucked under the trees and have large decks from which to enjoy the water. At the main area, there are indoor and outdoor dining areas, an interactive kitchen and a swimming pool. Explorers Camp has 5 canvas tents and 1 family tent and is available on a semi-exclusive use basis with 2 guides and 2 vehicles. From camp, guests enjoy views of a favourite waterhole and the dramatic Waterberg Mountains and with its large, shady lawns and dedicated family tent, is an ideal choice for families.

Dynamic and fun, yet responsible and sustainable, the activities at Marataba Conservation Camps are entirely tailored to suit every individual. Experiences are offered on a ‘mix and match’ basis and each booking has a private guide and vehicle to ensure the utmost flexibility.
