Zambia

WHAT WE LOVE: Having done safaris all over Africa our whole team agrees that Zambia is still one of the most sensational and authentic safari experiences. As the home of walking safaris this is one of the best places to get out of the vehicle and do a safari on foot. Hailed as Africa’s ‘diamond in the rough’ or even ‘the warm heart of Africa’, Zambia is a country blessed with awe-inspiring natural wonders, a huge variety of wildlife and an abundance of birdlife, huge water bodies (including 17 magnificent waterfalls) and great tracts of pristine bushveld. It has also been acknowledged as one of the safest countries in the world, whose inhabitants are known for being warm and welcoming. It is a landlocked country, sharing its borders with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Angola to the east, Namibia and Zimbabwe to the south, and Mozambique and Malawi to the east. It even shares a 2km border with Botswana!

Marataba Conservation Camps

Marataba, a 21,000-hectare (52,000-acre), privately managed section of the Marakele National Park, is uniquely situated where lush bushveld gives way to the Kalahari sands, in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. As a contractual National Park, Marataba is one of South Africa’s most innovative conservation models. From the vision of an iconic president to the unique public-private partnership that exists today, the focus is firmly on protecting the area’s diverse flora and fauna through modern and hands-on conservation practices.

A stay at Marataba Conservation Camps is focused on balancing tourism with nature. Guests can immerse themselves in solitude of the vast, wild spaces of Marataba whilst also actively participating in essential conservation projects. Founders Camp, with 4 suites and 1 vehicle and guide, can be booked on an exclusive-use basis. The camp overlooks the Matlabas River, which attracts a variety of wildlife. The suites are tucked under the trees and have large decks from which to enjoy the water. At the main area, there are indoor and outdoor dining areas, an interactive kitchen and a swimming pool. Explorers Camp has 5 canvas tents and 1 family tent and is available on a semi-exclusive use basis with 2 guides and 2 vehicles. From camp, guests enjoy views of a favourite waterhole and the dramatic Waterberg Mountains and with its large, shady lawns and dedicated family tent, is an ideal choice for families.

Dynamic and fun, yet responsible and sustainable, the activities at Marataba Conservation Camps are entirely tailored to suit every individual. Experiences are offered on a ‘mix and match’ basis and each booking has a private guide and vehicle to ensure the utmost flexibility.
