Our T.H.I.N.K.ing for the year ahead
15 January 2021

2021 ... now is the time to challenge our thinking

I am back from a fabulous break with my kids where we took to the mountains for a 6-day hike. This gave me time to think.
Think about the year ahead.
Think about the challenges and opportunities we face.
Think about how we will build our business and contribute to the African travel industry going forward.

With this in mind, we'd like to introduce T.H.I.N.K. the first of many communications providing Thought Provoking, Honest, Inspiring, No Nonsense Updates for Kindred Spirits.

T.H.I.N.K. replaces our Monday Minute and COVID Comment.
T.H.I.N.K. will continue to provide you with information and inspiration to create unforgettable and trustworthy itineraries for your guests across our Portfolio.
T.H.I.N.K. is a platform to encourage conversation and drive a new way of thinking about the future of tourism in Africa.

Our T.H.I.N.K.ing for the year ahead

No doubt it is going to be a slow start. While we see new bookings coming in, we are facing another wave of postponements as travellers move their trips to 2022.
There is however strong booking indication that the latter half of this year (once the vaccine has kicked in) will see that pent up demand for travel materialising.

While travel is still recalibrating we are taking this time to rethink our core business principles, relook at how we did things in the past and consider what is best for the future.
Watch this space as we will soon be launching a few new conservation based experiences across our Portfolio.
I have also been invited to be a mentor to The Conscious Travel Foundation. A truly inspirational initiative developed by a forward thinking group of UK based travel planners.

We have had a few big changes in the past 6 months and I remain committed to building our talent pool with a strong focus on strategic consultancy, brand development and marketing. The most recent additions to our team are:
ALICIA BRETT | Business Development
Alicia joins us on as a business consultant to drive new opportunities. We worked together in our UK office and she has since then been with The Safari Collection and The Long Run.
LAUREN GERBER | Marketing & Trade Relations
After many years with Livingstone Safaris and Wilderness Safaris, Lauren brings a wealth of tour operating insights which will help us transform our Classics website, agent tools as well as assist with more functional information for our trade partners.
ANGELA BROOKS | Digital Marketing
Angela brings tech and digital marketing expertise which is much needed as we redevelop our website and support our members with their digital platforms.

Farewell to Machaba Safaris

Change is inevitable and we bid farewell to Machaba Safaris in Botswana and Zimbabwe. We have loved working with Alistair and Wendy Rankin and this amazing group of committed safari experiences. It has been inspiring to see them grow from strength to strength over the past few years starting with 4 lodges and private camps in Botswana to what will soon be 11 amazing experiences in Botswana and Zimbabwe.
We wish them all the very best as they grow and develop further.
Together with our dedicated members and our shared commitment (stronger now than ever) to building a more sustainable Africa, we remain positive and look forward to growing business with you in the year ahead.

Warmest regards

South Africa

WHAT WE LOVE: Many of our team are South African and we are all extremely passionate about the country, its people, wildlife and scenic beauty – who would not be with an office in the Cape winelands! But most of all we are proud of what South Africa has achieved and the challenges we have overcome. It is a country that has diversity as its hallmark. From lush forests, vast savannahs, beautiful beaches, arid semi-desert, dramatic mountain ranges to its cosmopolitan cities, ‘Big Five’ wildlife reserves, winelands, gourmet restaurants and colourful shanty towns: South Africa has all any visitor could ask for. Strong on adventure, sport, nature and wildlife, it is also a pioneer and global leader in responsible tourism.

Mila Tented Camp

Located in Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, a conservation concession dedicated to the balance between wildlife and communities, this area is only available to a handful of guests, facilitating an excellent, uncrowded safari experience within the greater Serengeti eco-system.

With five tented rooms and a two-bedroomed family tent, Mila Tented Camp draws inspiration from the Hadzabe, who are known for their honey. This is reflected in the natural linens, textiles, and colour which blend into the environment and welcome travellers to soak up the beautiful surroundings, both inside and out.

Guests staying at Mila Tented Camp are allocated a private vehicle and guide per booking and together with undertaking a safari adventure they can visit the Hadzabe, Da'toga and Maasai tribes for a glimpse into their culture and traditions as they go about their way of life. Furthermore there is the option of fly camping for those who want a real sense of adventure and a night under the stars.
