Picathartes. What is it?
15 April 2019

A rare bird to be discovered at Sangha

Journey into the heart of the Congo Basin to discover the picathartes*, rockfowl or bald crow found in the rainforests of tropical west and central Africa. These wild, untamed jungles spanning across the Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic hold a plethora of discoveries for the adventurous traveller.

Here, CONGO CONSERVATION COMPANY (CCC) has pioneered travel with fixed itineraries between ODZALA DISCOVERY CAMPS and SANGHA LODGE, making the inaccessible, accessible.
  • GORILLA DISCOVERY: 4 nights at Odzala: The ultimate Gorilla tracking in combination with Rwanda.
  • ODZALA DISCOVERY: 7 nights at Odzala: Our best seller!
  • SANGHA DISCOVERY: 10 nights (7 Sangha & 3 Odzala): A popular discovery for returning guests who have already explored Odzala Discovery Camps.
  • CONGO BASIN DISCOVERY: 11 nights (7 Odzala & 4 Sangha): Fast becoming our most popular adventure, watch this space.
*NOTE: Best chances of seeing the picathartes are in October when they are breeding at the waterfalls close to Sangha Lodge in Central African Republic. Best Discoveries would be SANGHA DISCOVERY or CONGO BASIN DISCOVERY with travel in October.

Zambia

WHAT WE LOVE: Having done safaris all over Africa our whole team agrees that Zambia is still one of the most sensational and authentic safari experiences. As the home of walking safaris this is one of the best places to get out of the vehicle and do a safari on foot. Hailed as Africa’s ‘diamond in the rough’ or even ‘the warm heart of Africa’, Zambia is a country blessed with awe-inspiring natural wonders, a huge variety of wildlife and an abundance of birdlife, huge water bodies (including 17 magnificent waterfalls) and great tracts of pristine bushveld. It has also been acknowledged as one of the safest countries in the world, whose inhabitants are known for being warm and welcoming. It is a landlocked country, sharing its borders with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Angola to the east, Namibia and Zimbabwe to the south, and Mozambique and Malawi to the east. It even shares a 2km border with Botswana!

Tanda Tula Field Camp

Launched March 2014, Tanda Tula Field Camp is a first of its kind in South Africa. It is a non-permanent explorer-styled tented camp that has been considered the most environmentally friendly camp in South Africa. "Treading softly on the surface of the earth" is a foundation principle of everything that Tanda Tula stands for, and a principle that is echoed throughout each element of the new field camp experience. The Field Camp has evolved to meet the growing requirement in the market for privacy and exclusivity, in one of the few remaining private wilderness areas forming part of the Greater Kruger National Park. Tanda Tula Field Camp is a unique safari experience unlike any other. Consisting of four custom designed tents, with en-suite open air bush bathrooms and a communal mess tent, Tanda Tula Field Camp draws on the traditions of the classic East African safari with detailed campaign style furniture and soft furnishings from the Cape, North Africa, and Zanzibar. The field camp is set up and taken down for each safari, making it the ultimate eco-friendly camp, designed for minimum energy consumption and ground impact.  The camp caters for between 4 and 8 guests on an exclusive-use basis only. Guests are hosted by some of the industry's leading iconic guides who accompany them on an extraordinary journey of exploration and adventure.
