Picathartes. What is it?
15 April 2019

A rare bird to be discovered at Sangha

Journey into the heart of the Congo Basin to discover the picathartes*, rockfowl or bald crow found in the rainforests of tropical west and central Africa. These wild, untamed jungles spanning across the Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic hold a plethora of discoveries for the adventurous traveller.

Here, CONGO CONSERVATION COMPANY (CCC) has pioneered travel with fixed itineraries between ODZALA DISCOVERY CAMPS and SANGHA LODGE, making the inaccessible, accessible.
  • GORILLA DISCOVERY: 4 nights at Odzala: The ultimate Gorilla tracking in combination with Rwanda.
  • ODZALA DISCOVERY: 7 nights at Odzala: Our best seller!
  • SANGHA DISCOVERY: 10 nights (7 Sangha & 3 Odzala): A popular discovery for returning guests who have already explored Odzala Discovery Camps.
  • CONGO BASIN DISCOVERY: 11 nights (7 Odzala & 4 Sangha): Fast becoming our most popular adventure, watch this space.
*NOTE: Best chances of seeing the picathartes are in October when they are breeding at the waterfalls close to Sangha Lodge in Central African Republic. Best Discoveries would be SANGHA DISCOVERY or CONGO BASIN DISCOVERY with travel in October.

Mozambique

WHAT WE LOVE: Besides the fact that most of our team are beach fanatics and keen scuba divers, we love the fact that Mozambique is still rather undiscovered. Our Portfolio includes two amazing beach escapes: the Bazaruto Archipelago and the northern Quirimbas Archipelago. Visitors who combine a safari with the more commercial beaches of Mauritius have no idea on how much they are missing out. Mozambique is renowned for its relaxed, tropical atmosphere and exceptionally friendly people, but by far its biggest draw cards are its expansive beaches, secluded islands and spectacular marine life. With a history of limited coastal development combined with beautiful beaches and amazing numbers of whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles, coral fish and reefs. The setting for this experience is hard to beat.

Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge

This founding lodge features a classic-contemporary style of simple elegance that embraces the lodge's splendid setting high up on a steep bank overlooking the Great Fish River. The colour scheme comprises a calm and natural palette of earthy tones, from khaki browns to charcoal greys. Pewter and glass add an effortless yet understated glamour to the furnishings; artefacts such as ostrich eggshells, hides and horns create subtle points of interest and relevance to the lodge's surrounds, whilst natural linens and plenty of texture preserve its simple but sophisticated atmosphere. Stone walls, thatch roofs and long wooden walkways bring natural materials into the interiors, blurring the distinction between inside and outside.

The nine luxurious suites have been designed to take full advantage of the spectacular scenery. Floor-to-ceiling framed glass doors fold back to reveal an uninterrupted wilderness, and the en-suite bathrooms, complete with bath as well as indoor and outdoor showers, separate loo and twin basins offer unmatched views over the sweeping landscape beyond. Keep cool with overheadfans and air conditioning, and enjoy a spacious thatched veranda and private plunge pool with terrace in every suite.

Delicious African-inspired meals are served on private decks, in the candlelit dining room, or in the cosy boma under a magnificent starlit sky. Rugged natural materials like rock, stone and thatch combine with soft-light lanterns, deep overstuffed sofas featuring clean contemporary lines and natural linens with plenty of texture to provide a simple but sophisticated atmosphere, inviting guests to linger and chat in friendly, tranquil spaces.
