Remote, Authentic, Experiential

28 July 2016

ZAMBIA: My recent trip has given me a renewed vigour for what is essentially an incredibly authentic and true safari experience. In speaking to guests who were travelling through our camps, when I asked why they had opted for Zambia, they all had the same answer: AUTHENTICITY. Few destinations remain where you experience 7 different camps and never see another vehicle on safari, only an abundance of superb wildlife sightings.
Karen and I visited:
Old Mondoro & Chiawa Camp (Grant Cumings)
Tafika & Chikoko (Remote Africa Safaris - Coppinger Family Camps)
ending at Chindeni, Bilimungwe & Chamilandu (The Bushcamp Company - Andy Hogg)

IN SUMMARY:
  • WALKING — not the 'Poop and Paws' kind, rather a good pace that takes in birds and big game. CHIKOKO TRAILS and OLD MONDORO were brilliant for this.
  • GAME DRIVES — morning, afternoon and night drives, we had the most excellent guides and sightings.
  • RIVER SAFARIS — Either by motor boat or canoe in the Lower Zambezi - great for water birds while watching elephants and larger mammals testing their aquatic abilities.
  • FOOD — The food at TAFIKA CAMP was exceptional. Their vegetable garden is the source of culinary wonders. Pizza lunches at THE BUSHCAMP COMPANY added to variation, the surprise river cruise brunch at CHIAWA CAMP was the best setting, while fireside dinners at OLD MONDORO had a real safari atmosphere.
  • BANGWEULU SWAMPS — one of the very special experiences was my long standing dream to visit the Bangweulu Swamps in search of an elusive shoebill! No luck with the bird but I did have the most spectacular flying adventure. WATCH IT HERE.
