Roadtrip South Africa - Part 4

#roadtripsouthafrica Part 4 of our 3-month adventure celebrating South Africa.

ROUTE: from Bloemhof Karoo we decided to take the most untraveled route on this trip yet! So off we set on 3 hours of dirt roads and only passed 1 car! Just before Richmond on the N1 we took a single-track dirt road to De Aar, then to Philipstown (if you blink you would miss it) to finally arrive at a friend's private wildlife ranch outside Colesberg.

EXPERIENCE: We needed to invest in more warm clothes for Zaza (clearly did not listen to the packing brief) so we decided to try our luck in De Aar. As the second-largest railway junction in ZA and almost in the heart of the country, we were delighted to find a good selection of small-town shops and added to the warm clothes in her bag.

Then off we set on open roads to our friend's magnificent reserve - over 50,00 ha of Kalahari Karoo. Teeming with wildlife, we enjoyed amazing game drives. On the first night, we counted 5 aardwolves before 6 pm plus a very entertaining rhino mum and bouncing calf.

Venturing into parts of the deep Karoo feels like stepping into a different world. It has been a fascinating learning curve understanding how these off-the-beaten-track areas have very sustainable business models.
